A SCENT

OF GINGER

Grimdark Fairytales

Book #3

"When the truth takes root, the whole forest burns..."

Dortchen Vild lives alone, in an old stone house on a hillside. Having once been a teacher in the nearby village of Hesse, she has lived in the house for three decades, passing her time making stews and concocting herbal remedies.

But she also has a secret: she can summon plants with her touch, conjuring them from nothing. It is an ancient gift that resides in the valves of her heart: a gift that has saved her, but also taken those closest to her in the past. The mystery is hers alone, and the villagers of Hesse ask no questions.

Or that is, until two of her former students arrive with fifty mercenaries at their backs, demanding to know where she is. Because, according to them, Dortchen Vild has a power worth killing for.

And Hansel and Gretel have every intention of claiming it for their own...

“Just wait, she breathed, the pressure in her ears. Just wait until nightfall… when the monsters come out.”

After finishing a one-thousand page colossus in my other series, there was a strange adjustment to writing a novella. But saying that, it was a great joy to introduce Dortchen and step into her story, particularly the relationships - both beautiful and tragic - she shares with the other characters.
